General, Col testify against El-Zakzaky as trial resumes

The trial of leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (Shi’ites), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and wife, Zeenat, resumed on Wednesday as two witnesses, a Major- General and a Colonel, testified at the Kaduna State High Court presided over by Justice Gideon Kurada.

The Shiite leader and wife were standing trial for culpable homicide, and disruption of public peace.

Speaking shortly after court proceedings on Wednesday, the defendants’ counsel, Femi Falana(SAN), said, “The two witnesses were taken and the trial will continue tomorrow (Thursday).

“The officers were put under cross-examination and they gave evidence of the operation that lasted between the 12th  and 14th of December 2015, and the role of the military in the operation.”

The IMN leader had on September 29 pleaded not guilty to the eight counts against him.

The presiding judge had taken the no-case submission by the IMN leader in August 7, 2020.

However, Justice Kurada fixed September 29, for ruling on the motion after counsel to the defendant, Abubakar Marshall, who took brief for Falana, asked the court to quash the charges.

At the resumed sitting, Kurada again reserved ruling in the motion until hearing in the substantive suit.
