It has come to the attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Benue State Chapter, that the Benue State Command of the Nigeria Police Force recently in Gboko arrested one Atsor Terzungwe for the alleged offence of "....deceiving unsuspecting members of the public by collecting the numbers on their Permanent Voters Card (PVC), Bank Account Numbers and Phone numbers with promise of payment in due course."
The suspect who was tagged as an "Electoral Offender" by the Police in a statement issued yesterday and signed by Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the State Command, DSP. Moses Joel Yamu, is also said to have confessed that he had been contracted by one Charles Azoo of Abuja to collate the aforementioned data and forward to him.
This development validates the alarm PDP had raised to the public in a statement a few days back to the effect that we have uncovered a scam by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) to buy Permanent Voters Cards from Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and other members of the public.
You will recall that we had revealed in our statement that the APC PVC buying scam had been uncovered on the day the party staged a decamping ceremony inside the IDPs Camp at Daudu a few weeks back, while fraudulently making the IDPs who came out in their numbers to believe they were at the camp on a humanitarian visit.
We have it on good authority that while the fraudulent decamping ceremony was ongoing, APC agents went round the camp secretly offering monies ranging between N5,000 and N10,000 to the IDPs in exchange for their PVCs
APC agents then continued with the scam going about secretly to IDPs camps and as well to residences housing those victims of herdsmen attacks offering to them various sums of money in exchange for their PVCs, and this strategy was extended to other members of the public.
The aim of the uncovered APC scam, like we had warned in our statement, is to rig the 2019 elections in their favour with the attendant potentially negative and disruptive consequences to our fledgling democracy.
This is an impending disaster we are calling on Benue people to rise up, reject and resist.
APC has failed in leadership across Nigeria with ample evidence of their failure in the acute state of hunger and poverty, unemployment, insecurity, as well as the highest levels of nepotism and executive hypocrisy which is reflected in the unprecedented levels of corruption ever witnessed in the history of this country.
In the particular case of Benue State, APC having held power for over three years has become synonymous with the mass killings of women, children and the aged and a lack of federal presence in the citing and execution of capital projects in the state.
The APC led federal government also has over the years exhibited quite a shocking level of contempt for the people of Benue State, with the latest being the inexcusable failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to invite neither of the paramount traditional rulers of the state in the persons of the Tor Tiv and the Och' Idoma to the meeting with the visiting Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, a meeting which was held ostensibly to discuss issues of security and the herdsmen crisis.
It is therefore, expected that APC will likely resort to nocturnal methods in their evidently desperate bid to reclaim power in Benue State, since they have failed so abysmally and have no message to preach to the people to win their votes.
It is against the backdrop of this very obvious reality that we repeat our call to the people to reject and stoutly resist the unfolding electoral evil represented in the uncovered and PVC buying scam.
We understand that the police have pledged to carry on with ongoing investigations into the matter, with a view to arrest the contractor, and while we commend them for being on top of this situation so far, we charge them not to relent in their duty to ensure that this ugly development is nipped in the bud in the best interests of democracy and Nigeria.
Bemgba Iortyom,
State Publicity Secretary,
PDP, Benue State.
