EVEN IDPs ARE AGAINST SUSPENSION OF BENUE RANCHING LAW - ORTOM

By: Jimin Geoffrey
Governor Samuel Ortom has stated that even Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs who are going through difficulties in various camps are against any attempt to suspend the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment law of the state.
He stated this today at Catholic Youth Centre Makurdi during the child dedication of Joseph Ngbea Junior by the family of Dr. Joseph Ngbea, Chairman Governing Council of Benue State Polytechnic Ugbokolo.
The Governor said he was inspired by the determination of those in the camps when a question of whether the ranching law should be suspended was put to them, saying their encouragement and that of the church as well as people of the state had kept him going.
He decried statements credited to the Inspector General of Police that the ranching law should be suspended pending when ranches were constructed by states, saying the Police boss lacked the constitutional powers to advise states on enactment of laws.
Governor Ortom while noting that it was good to give thanks to God for the gift of a child, described Dr. Ngbea as a trustworthy friend and lieutenant who had paid his dues and deserved to receive blessings.
In a testimony, Dr. Joseph Ngbea expressed gratitude to God for the gift of a male child in addition to a federal appointment as Board Member Federal Medical Center Umuahia, saying he prayed and God answered.
Earlier in a sermon, Parish Priest of Catholic Youth Center, Rev. Fr. Celestine Tyowua urged the congregation to abide by the commandments of God and be humble in their service to God and humanity.
The clergyman noted that the anger of Governor Ortom against the invasion of Benue by Fulani herdsmen was justifiable in the sight of God, stressing that even Jesus Christ demonstrated his anger against the desecration of the temple of God by the Jews.
