BENUE KILLINGS: FORMER EFCC BOSS CALLS FOR MORE INTELLIGENCE GATHERING

By Jimin Geoffrey
Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri has called for more intelligence gathering by security agents to dictate and address security challenges before they get out of hand.

Mrs. Waziri who stated this today during a condolence visit on Governor Samuel Ortom at the Benue Peoples House Makurdi also called on security agencies to step up their network to be able to nip security challenges in the bud.
She described as barbaric and heinous a situation where children and pregnant women would be hacked down in such gruesome manner, stressing that she was further pained by the fact that children had been forced out of school due to the crisis.
The former EFCC Boss however sued for restraint by Benue people in terms of reprisal attacks, saying the important thing was for the government to explore peaceful ways of resolving the crisis.
According to her, some babies born by traumatized women in their time of distress have no milk while some grown-up children are exposed to harsh weather conditions, adding that "a child's smile softens the hearts of parents."
Mrs. Waziri while presenting a list of assorted items to the governor for onward distribution to the displaced persons, promised to do more as resources permit and as her associates and friends continue to extend their good gestures to her.
She commended the motherly role played by wife of the Governor, Dr. Mrs. Eunice Ortom in caring for the displaced persons and prayed God to endow her with more wisdom and resources to continue in that regard.
In his response, Governor Ortom advocated for a holistic approach devoid of ethnic or sectional interest in addressing the herdsmen/farmers crisis.
He described as worrisome a situation where armed herdsmen and their cattle operate with impunity while relevant authorities turn blind eyes to their nefarious actions.
While accusing the country's leadership for chasing shadows instead of adopting modern approaches in solving the farmers/herders crisis in the country, Governor Ortom appreciated Mrs. Waziri for always identifying with her state of birth in its trying or happy moments, saying her relief materials were highly appreciated.
