Killings: Buhari summons Ortom, Benue leaders to Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari is embarrassed with the recent spate of killings in Benue State.
Consequently, the president has summoned an emergency meeting with Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom and other leaders of thought from the state at the presidential villa, Abuja today. Over 70 people were slaughtered by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Logo and Guma local governments in the state on New Year Day.

Those killed have been given mass burial by the Benue State government last week Thursday. A reliable presidency source confirmed to our correspondent that President Buhari will meet the Benue delegation shortly after laying wreath at the National Arcade, in commemoration of the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration today. The source said political, traditional and opinion leaders from the state are expected to take part in the meeting. According to the source, considering the tension, which the killings have generated, the leaders will comprehensively discuss strategies geared towards addressing the security challenges facing the state.

“The urgent meeting was inevitable because of the frequency and scale of such violence and the reactions that have trailed the incidents,” the source noted. He said the presidency is embarrassed by the largescale loss of lives caused by such repeated violence against innocent people.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the discussions at the meeting will address the issue of the Fulani herdsmen, but may go beyond their menace to include the issue of the arming, training and financing of militia groups by some state governments. He recalled the recent arrest of some armed militia members by the army and their confession of being armed by the Benue State Government, which has added a new twist to the Benue saga.
