How I escaped Assassination by Fulani Gunmen – CAN Chairman

The Chairman of the Kogi State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop John Ibenu, has narrated how he escaped assassination attempt by gunmen he identified as Fulani.
His car was riddled with bullets when he narrated his sad encounter with the gunmen to journalists in Lokoja on Wednesday.
Only in December 2017, former Minister of State for Health, Chief Gabriel Aduku, was also escaped assassination attempt when six gunmen invaded his house in Anyigba.
Bishop Ibenu said that he was returning from his village in Kogi East at about 5.30 pm on Sunday when seven suspected Fulani men along Ojodu in Ofu Local Government Area rushed out of the bush and opened fire on his vehicle.
He said that four of the armed men came from the bush and in his attempt to make a U-turn, another three stormed out and shot at his car.
The cleric explained that the bandits did not wear any mask, but carried AK-47, saying that with divine intervention he managed to escape from the scene to a nearby village.
Ibenu asked Governor Ibrahim Bello to intensify more efforts at curbing criminal activities in the state.
He said that within a space of one week, a series of kidnapping were recorded along Lokoja-Ajaokuta Road and other places in the state.
In the Aduku’s case, he was attacked by the gunmen who stormed his country home in Anyigba.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Secretary-General of Kogi East Elders’ Council (KEEC), Mr. Alphonsus Alhassan, he alleged that “by the evening of December 18, 2017, Chief. Gabriel Aduku, who is the deputy chairman of the council was accosted and manhandled at his residence in Anyigba, Kogi State.
He said: “The hoodlums in their twenties were six in number and were in uniform, while three of them stayed outside, two of them masked, entered his sitting room through his kitchen.
“One of them carried a pump action rifle while the other two had pistols which they pointed at his head and informed him that they were sent from Abuja to pick him for questioning.
“He refused to accompany them despite their physically trying to bundle him out as he insisted he would rather die within his compound if need be,” Ahassan said.
