By: Peter Duru

Ahead of the November 1 commencement of enforcement of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, recently enacted by the Benue State govern-ment,
Governor Samuel Ortom has challenged critics of the law to come out with an alternative or remain silent.
Governor Ortom spoke, yesterday, shortly after receiving an award as the Best Security Minded Governor of the Year 2017 from the Print and Electronic Media Owners Association of Nigeria, PEMOAN, in Makurdi.
Gov Samuel Ortom He reiterated that the law was not intended to chase herdsmen out of the state, but to ensure their safety and the protection of local farmers.
Earlier, President of PEMOAN, Mr. Timothy Hembaor, said the award was in recognition of the governor’s performance in the area of security, “considering the security situation in the state when you took over in 2015.”
Your amnesty programme and anti-open grazing law are some of the greatest achievement of your administration, it is in the light of these and many more that we are giving you this award.”
