Investigate IGP over allegations, probe Misau’s resignation – Abubakar Tsav

A retired former Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Tsav, has said the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, should be investigated over the corruption allegations leveled against him by Senator Hamman Misau.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Tsav said the allegation of collecting N10 billion monthly allegedly generated from companies and some individuals should be investigated.

He also said Senator Misau should be investigated and the circumstances of his resignation from the police force clarified.

He said: “There is no more discipline and effective supervision in the Nigeria Police Force. Nepotism and ethnicity have taken control of the entire police force and professionalism and competence thrown to the dogs.

“Unless there is total overhaul of the Nigeria Police Force, we may end up having criminals in police uniforms.

“The allegations made against the IGP are serious and damaging and therefore need be thoroughly investigated if President Buhari is serious in his fight against corruption. There should be no sacred cow. Senator Hamman Misau also needs to be investigated.”

Tsav blamed the whole situation on negligence by the police management team, noting that the current IGP may have inherited the situation from the past police management.

He added: “If someone refused to go on transfer and nobody said anything about him, they cannot now intimidate him because he made allegations about the IGP.”

He said in the police, when someone refuses to go on transfer after the first 21 days, he is declared absent from duty.

He said: “Misau said he refunded his salary and got a receipt when he resigned, when he won election, they knew about him.”

“If the police were serious they should have sent the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi to arrest him,” he added.

Tsav noted that there is a lot of grumbling especially among retired police officers. He said the senator should be thoroughly investigated to unravel the circumstances in which he retired.

He said, “If you post somebody as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) he should not stay there for more than one duty tour.”

He said they left him for too long and he was ADC to three ministers in Abuja and lost his police bearing. He pointed out that some ADCs have spent eight years with governors and have lost police bearing.

He explained that the Police Reward Fund was used to collect money for extraordinary duty like those of policemen posted to oil companies and other firms.

He said the money collected is usually divided and part of it is put into the reward fund and the rest is given to policemen on duty. Tsav said the allegation of convert such money should be investigated.
