MRS. EUNICE ORTOM TASKS WOMEN ON EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING

Wife of the Benue State Governor, Mrs. Eunice Ortom, PhD, today charged nursing mothers on the need to exclusively breastfeed their children.
Mrs. Ortom who gave the charge at the Family Support Programme Clinic in Makurdi while declaring open the 2017 World Breastfeeding Week said exclusively breastfed children grow up stronger and are usually intelligent among other numerous benefits.
She stated that mothers also benefit immensely when they adhere to exclusive breast feeding as it prevents breast and ovarian cancer.
The governor's wife however noted that for exclusive breastfeeding to be sustained, husbands also have a role to play by ensuring that mothers are well fed so that they could produce enough breast milk for their babies.
Earlier in their remarks, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Mrs. Cecilia Ojabo and her Women Affairs and Social Development counterpart, Mrs. Lady Isegbe Ajene said exclusive breastfeeding protects the child from killer diseases, stunted growth and also creates a bond between mother and the child.
On his part, Executive Secretary Benue State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Bem Ageda, acknowledged the motherly support of Mrs. Ortom to the Board, noting that her concern was an indication of the love the present administration has for the well-being of the rural populace.
He described breast milk as the best meal for children and encouraged mothers to strictly adhere to the practice.
High points of the event was the presentation of gifts to outstanding women for exclusive breastfeeding and its dramatization by Infant and Young Child Feeding support group, Agan.
