IN BENUE: Court remands serving councilor, ex-supervisor for alleged killing

A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Makurdi, Benue State capital, presided over by Mrs. A.I. Igyama, yesterday remanded in prison a serving councilor in Kwande Local Council, Mr. Simon Aondover Semali, and a former supervisory councilor in the council, Akuha Shimaibo, for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Semali and Shimaibo, both of Mbaikyaa kindred in Shangev Ya district of the council were arrested by the police and charged to court for their alleged involvement in the killing of a 45-year-old man, Iormbaamo Iorchir.

When the case came up for mention, the police prosecutor, Inspector Imo Edward, asked for more time to enable the police arrest more suspects, who are still at large.

The Guardian, however, observed that no counsel showed up for the two defendants at the time the court sat before the case was adjourned to August 31, 2017 for mention.

This has brought to six the number of persons arrested and remanded at the prison for the offence by the same court; the other four were arraigned and remanded at the previous sitting of the court.
