Lagos wants accountants to help generate revenue

The Lagos State Government has asked accountants in its employ not only to be managers of finances, but also help in generating revenue
.

The state Accountant General, Mrs. Abimbola Umar, during an interactive session with Directors of Accounts in the Lagos State Public Service, added that the government expected the officials to be more creative in managing public finances.

A statement on Thursday said Umar urged the accountants to explore potential revenue sources.

She said, “The era of debit and credit accounting is over. Financial managers in the state should raise the bar of excellence and assume the position of financial advisers who will, in addition to their regular accounting duties, imbibe the culture of regular researching into new trends in the accounting world.

“Lagos is metamorphosing from a megacity into a smart city. We must improve on revenue generation, block likely windows of leakages, and propose new revenue generating areas to our ministries and agencies.”

Umar also told the participants to make use of acceptable accountability procedures in their works.
