Teachers’ sacrifice can’t be quantified – Gov Ortom

Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, has described teachers as pillars and the future of the state’s education system.
Ortom who stated this yesterday in a message to Benue teachers on the occasion of this year’s World Teachers Day said no wage or compensation will be enough for the sacrifices made by those who have chosen the teaching profession in the training and moulding of characters at different stages of education.
The governor who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Terver Akase, stated that the strength of every society lies in its standard of education which is driven by the quality of its teachers.
According to the governor, the theme of this year’s World Teachers’ Day which is ‘Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status’ is appropriate as it has further drawn the attention of nations to the significant role teachers play and the need to improve their working conditions and treat them with greater respect.
Governor Ortom assured them that his administration will continue to accord importance to teachers in the state which will manifest in improved payment of their salaries and pensions allowances to those who have retired as well as ensuring that no teacher who is due for promotion is denied the right.
He explained that the State Government was poised to clear the backlog of salaries owed teachers as soon as funds are available.
He congratulated teachers in the state as they join their counterparts in other states to celebrate the day.
Some of the teachers of both public and private schools who spoke in an interview including Margaret Targema Iorfa Apemfe, Gloria Inalegwu and Onu Obeya expressed dismay over the way teachers are being treated in connection to their wages and appealed for a change.
