The People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State held its State Congress on Tuesday, 10th May, 2016, at the party's State Secretariat in Makurdi at which new Executive Committee members were elected into various offices with John Ngbede as Chairman, Tsetim Ayargwer, Deputy-Chairman and Moses Audu as Secretary.
In attendance at the occasion were leaders and stalwarts of the party from the three senatorial districts of the state, amongst them immediate past governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Suswam; former Senate President, Senator David Mark; former Minister of Interior, Cmrd. Abba Moro and immediate past Chairman of the party in the state, Dr. Agbo Emmanuel.
In his speech at the occasion, former governor, Gabriel Suswam lamented the poor performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) controlled government of Gov. Samuel Ortom which he said has so far exhibited a high degree of intolerance for the opposition in the state while imposing multiple taxation on the people, and failing to pay salaries to workers for upwards of five months, thereby causing untold hardship on the people in the state.
Suswam also pointed to the huge debt profile accumulated so far by the Ortom government running into over fifty billion naira, with very little to show for in terms of development projects, while the N28.5 billion bailout loan collected for settlement of workers salary arrears has mostly been embezzled prompting President Muhammadu Buhari to order the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to probe Benue State and two other states out of twenty seven states which collected the loan.
Senator David Mark on his part expressed confidence that by the poor performance of the ruling APC so far, the PDP stands a good chance of winning the next local government elections in the state and will also recapture power at the federal and states levels in 2019.
The former Senate President observed that the APC is still fixated on bandying falsehood and propaganda as their major strategy even now that they are in government, wondering when the change that they had promised Benue people and indeed Nigerians will come.
In the words of former Interior Minister, Cmrd. Abba Moro, the ruling APC government in the state is afraid of the PDP and is doing everything possible to silence the opposition party which is getting more popular by the day as the people have seen clearly the difference between the PDP and the APC, and have since regretted voting the APC into power.
Earlier, in his welcome address, outgoing State Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Agbo Emmanuel, had decribed as unfortunate and a dangerous development the refusal by the Ortom government to grant the PDP access to public squares in Makurdi for the congress, even as he warned that the opposition party will respond in kind whenever it is subjected to any such unlawful treatment again.
In an acceptance speech on behalf of the newly elected Exco members, Chairman, John Ngbede, expressed appreciation for the honour done him and his colleagues by the opportunity given them to serve the party at the highest leadership level in the state, promising their total commitment and dedication to duty and the confidence that they will lead the party to victory in the state at all subsequent elections.
