If those who coined the word "representative" were right in their opinion then they intended it to mean standing in place of another and in legislative perspective it connotes standing in place of a constituency. This presupposes that, they should be accountable to the people they represent. Sorrowfully however, this has eluded the Benue masses as their representatives at the national assembly have rather considered them as nuisance.
This has been the attitude of most of the representatives from Benue state who fail to pick up calls and also neglect to reply texts messages from their constituents. This attitude has left the people disappointed in their so called representatives who have rather treated them with scorn as though they are representatives to people of other constituencies. This has not communicated to us the true meaning of a representative. A friend from Kogi had explained to me that their representatives were nice enough to return calls and answer texts.
The people have expressed dismay that, this same people came begging during the electioneering to be voted into office and now have suddenly become enemy to the people who made them who they are. The people have further lamented that, there is always a presumption that they call to bring problems to them to render aid and noted that, this is not always the case as most times there are genuine issues of concern for them to take note of.
It is noteworthy to commend the representative for Makurdi/Guma Federal constituency, Hon. Dickson Tarkighir and his Gwer/Gwer West counterpart, Hon. Mike Gbilah,Ezekiel Adaji, Samson Okwu of the zone c extraction for showing some difference in this regard and been reputed by the people for taking up calls and replying text messages. This step is commendable as the most important towards effective representation of a people as it gives a feeling of confidence to the people that they are taken to heart.
It is therefore pertinent to give out words of advise to our Benue representatives at the national assembly to learn to pick up calls and attend to issues of their constituency interest. Hence it is noted that information is power, if our representatives continue to ignore our calls, they may one day ignore a life-saving call.
