Workers Verification Has Saved Us N2.8b – Gov Ortom

By: John Shiaondo
Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has said the staff verification exercise undertaken by his administration has save over N2.8 billion out of the N28 billion bailout funds he collected from the federal government to clear workers salary arrears.
Ortom who disclosed this yesterday in Makurdi while receiving the report of the Administrative Commission of Inquiry into the Sale /Lease of Government Assets from June 2007 to May 2015,  explained that N1.2 billion was saved from the state workers while N1.6 billion was saved from the local government.
N2.8 that would have gone into the pockets of ghost workers was saved and we have injected it into the treasury to be used for other projects because it is not a grant but a loan that must be paid back,” Ortom stated.
Governor Ortom commended the committee for hard work and for submitting the report in time, saying government will not sweep under the carpet but quickly set a white paper committee that will dose out next line of action.
According to him the commission of inquiry was not intended to witch hunt any one but aimed at correcting the an wrongs.
“Nothing will stop my government from exposing the truth, the report will help government to achieve its target in the administration, believing that what is in the report is the true reflection of what is on ground.”
“We are not witch-hunting anybody but what we are saying is that, if you have taken govt property better return it before the law will catch up with you,” the Governor stressed.
