Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has urged the National Assembly to pass the bill on establishment of ranches to end killings in the state and other parts of the country resulting from herders' invasion of some communities.
Governor Ortom made the call at the Benue Peoples House when members of the House of Representatives Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness paid him a courtesy visit.
He said the idea of gazing routes was no longer feasible owing to increase in population of the country, stressing that even grazing reserves could only provide a temporary solution.
"Today, many countries of the world have embraced the idea of ranches for rearing of cattle as it is no longer practicable to use grazing routes. This is why I have been advocating the establishment of ranches. The people of Benue are confident that the National Assembly will hasten action on the passage of the bill on ranches to help save our people from frequent invasions by herdsmen who leave scores of innocent people dead", he stated.
Govenor Ortom called on all Nigerians to condemn the unwarranted killings going on in the state, maintaining that the major business of Benue people is farming so anything that threatens the people's main occupation should be rejected.
He disclosed that the State Government and local government areas in the state had provided twenty Hilux vehicles to assist security agencies while the Federal Government had provided flying boats in addition to troops to ensure land and waterways security in parts of the state.
The Governor said he could not attend today's National Economic Council meeting in Abuja because of the series of security meetings he is holding in the state on the crisis, hinting that he will soon host a meeting of stakeholders in Zone C to deliberate on the security situation in Agatu and other places affected by the crisis.
Earlier, the Chairman, House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, Hon. Ali Isa, told Governor Ortom that they were in Benue to commiserate with the people of the state over the killings and to reach out to victims of the crisis. He said the House had unanimously passed a resolution directing its Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, Committee on Army and Committee on Security and Intelligence to help provide emergency relief materials and adequate security in all the affected areas.

He stated that the House of Representatives was aware of the efforts made by Governor Ortom in bringing the crisis to an end. "The House has taken note of the efforts of the Benue State Governor, His Excellency, Chief Samuel Ortom in protecting lives and property and working for peace in Benue State and Nigeria generally. We urge everyone to continue to support and encourage the Governor as he continues to partner with the Federal Government in working out ways of bringing lasting peace in Benue State", Hon. Isa stated.
Governor Ortom later led the House Committee members to inspect relief materials at the warehouse of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA.
