Revenue is the life wire of all business endeavor and economic activities in both the private and public sector of the economy of any nation or state. Sources of revenue of a state determine the level of achievement of the goals and objectives of such state as regards projects and programs. The need therefore, for the state to identify, harness and deploy revenue wisely for the execution of projects cannot be overemphasized. It is against this backdrop that the members of Benue Prospective Employees Forum (BEPEF) in conjunction with Benue State Youths, from all over the 3 senatorial districts marched through the major streets of Makurdi metropolis to demonstrate their support for the new tax regime and indeed, his Excellency, Governor Samuel Ortom.
The able-bodied young men and women who chanted solidarity songs began the exercise from Gyado Villa, through BIRS Corporate Headquarters where they were addressed by Mr. Victor Beke (Director, Tax Assessment) and Moses Igbawua (DOT). The train took them to the state Secretariat, Ministry of Youth & sport, Local Government service Commission, Benue People’s House roundabout, where they were addressed by His Excellency, Governor-samuel Ortom.
In his address, the Executive Governor thanked the youth for their show of solidarity. According to him, he was experiencing such a positive step in the right direction from the youth for the first time. He therefore called on them to support his administration especially in the area of revenue security and promised to make them reap the fruit of their tax commitment.
Speaking, the President of BEPEF and leader of the demonstration, Comrade Isaac Mtom expressed satisfaction with the Ortom led administration, thanking the Governor for appointing a selfless, accountable and transparent tax genuis, Mrs. Mimi Orubibi to head the revenue board. He therefore, urged the entire populace to cooperate with BIRS for an increased revenue generation in the state. In his view, Comrade Isaac condemned those who have been kicking against the use of Point of Sale (PoS) as a replacement for manual receipts, positing that such people are the real enemies of good governance.
