In continuation of his unscheduled visits to places in the state capital, Governor Samuel Ortom was today at abattoirs in North bank and Wurukum Markets to inspect the facilities with a promise to build a modern abattoir in Makurdi.
In company of his Commissioners of Agriculture, Health and Industry, as well as other officials, the Governor was conducted round the various abattoirs by the Divisional Agric Officer in Makurdi Local Government, Dr Edward Amali.
Addressing Journalists shortly after the inspection, Governor Ortom announced plans by his administration to build a modern abbatoir in the state capital
The Governor who decried the poor sanitary condition of the existing abattoirs, stated that contract for the project would be awarded soon, saying he would hold a meeting with the managers and users of the abbatoirs to fashion out ways of improving the conditions of the existing ones.
The Divisional Agric Officer, Dr Amali pointed out that they were collaborating with relevant government agencies to improve the sanitary condition of the abbatoirs.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr.James Anbua, described the Governor's inspection as a show of concern for the welfare of the people.
Mr.Anbua said when built, the modern abbatoir would not only boost the revenue of the Ministry of agriculture but also the economy and health as well as image of the state.
Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Cecilia Ojabo said the Governor demonstrated uncommon concern for the health needs of the people, noting that modern abattoirs were needed in all the markets.
In his remarks, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Mr.Abrahams Kwaghngu, said the modern abattoir would end years of roasting animals with tyres and ensure hygienic conditions.
