IF SUSWAM WAS CONNECTED
By: Berger Alfred
For sometime now there is the needless comparison specially on the cyberspace between the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, supporters especially those loyal to the former Governor Gabriel Suswam and those of the All Progressives Congress, APC, supporters. The PDP supporters have alleged that if it were during Suswam's reign as Governor, the Tiv people would have dominated their Idoma counterparts at federal level in terms of federal appointments considering his connection at the federal level.
Those who made such assertions failed to know that the period upon which the Tiv nation suffered the greatest neglect in terms of federal appointments was the period upon which Suswam held sway as the Executive Governor of the state.
It was during the Suswam's regime that the Tiv people of North Central Nigeria were relegated to the background in terms of recruitment of our Tiv sons in to the Army, Navy, Airforce, police and para-military, federal ministries and parastatals. In all of these recruitment exercises carried out by the aforementioned, only 3% of our Tiv brothers and sisters were considered for the employment. All of these happened at the time Suswam was running errands for the former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Again, If Suswam was so connected as his supporters want us to believe, why is it that Suswam didn't influence a single federal project to Tiv land?
It is pertinent to note that there is no road leading to Suswam's village. That is the reason why Suswam is still using Canoe to cross through River Buruku to Logo local government, his hometown. Shameful as it is, he cannot even provide a flying boat to ease the movement of people across the said river.
One begins to wonder now the kind of connection and closeness Suswam loyalists claimed he had with the former president when he can not attract a single federal project to Tiv land.
Findings have revealed that the contract for the construction of a Bridge at river Buruku was awarded by the federal government in 2012, but because Suswam was not influential enough, Senator David Mark diverted the project to his constituency. This happened at the time Suswam was seen attending every national and international function with president Jonathan.
Another baseless comparison is where Suswam supporters have alleged that he (Suswam) influenced the appointments of Bem Angwe as Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, Robert Orya as Managing Director Nexim Bank and Paul Orhii as Director General, NAFDAC. I want to state here that all of these appointments were made without his knowledge, so the glory should not be given to him. The appointments were made based on the fact that the trio were qualified for the appointments on merit.
Moreover, Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa who was appointed minister without Gabriel's knowledge influenced most of appointments of Tiv sons during the short reign of President Musa Yar'adua.
For a man who stood helplessly to watch how Senator David Mark diverted every single appointment to Idomaland during his reign in power, has lost a seat in the forum of Tiv leaders who are connected, therefore his supporters should not talk where Tiv leaders are talking.
I elect to conclude here that Suswam is a sycophant who was only hovering around president Jonathan for his selfish ambition which included becoming a senator in 2015, the ambition the people of Zone A rejected in totality.
