The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has described reports of proposed sale of some National assets to revive the economy as a mere speculation.
Speaking to State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, the minister said the FG is still working on the most comprehensive manner to reflate the economy and will make its position known very soon.
The Minister stated:
“What the government will do is to reflate the economy. Everything you have heard so far is just suggestion. Until the government makes its position known, all these assets’ sale, assets’ leasing; whatever it is being bandied about, they are nothing but speculations.“The government is yet to come out with its position on how to bail out the economy, and it will do that position.”
Mr. Lai Mohammed added that while the NEC would make recommendations; it is the Federal Executive Council that would decide and what we decide will be the position of the government.
There have been calls on the Federal Government to sell some national assets in order to bail the economy out of the current recession.
The National Economic Council had last week backed plans to immediately inject more funds into the economy through assets’ sales and other measures as a way of tackling the recession.
The Minister has also responded to a story by The Economist published on September 24, 2016, entitled: ‘Nigeria’s War Against Indiscipline, Behave or be whipped.’
The article in the magazine accused Mr. President of attempting to tame Nigerians with the ‘Change Begins With Me’ scheme.
Mr. Lai Mohammed noted that the use of the word ‘tame’’ was unpardonable as it connoted that Nigerians are some kind of wild animals that must be domesticated, adding that the scheme which was introduced earlier this month was not in any way meant to silence Nigerians.
