FG sets to train youths in skill acquisition

The federal government, through its Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS), has restated its determination to train graduates and youths in skill acquisition, to stem the growing tide of unemployment.
The GIS Project Director, Mr. Dennis Chukwu, who spoke at the commencement of a 3-day orientation and employability skills training for 50 interns and some firms in Enugu, said the scheme is designed to fortify youths, especially the graduates, with intellectual resources to be employable and become employers of labour.
According to him, the Federal Ministry of Finance has trained over 35,000 out of the 41,161 graduates, consisting of 1%vulnerable, 68% males and 31% females’ beneficiaries across the country.
The Director affirmed that the FG was determined to increase the number of Nigerian graduates who would further benefit not only to become employable and but also create employment opportunities for others.
Chukwu, who was represented by the Ministry’s Assistant Director and GIS Deputy Head, Operations, Mr. Simon Tyungu, disclosed that Nigerian youths had proven in various capacities to be “self-reliant, innovative, enterprising, tenacious, and focused.”
Training monitors from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Nkechi Obi and Mr. Idowu Steven, emphasized the need for compliance to the clearly spelt out standards by training consultants, firms and interns.
They advised the interns to utilise the training programme as a post-graduation knowledge acquisition centre to acquaint themselves with worthwhile work-place experiences.
Other resources persons include Mr. Steve Yomi Adetula, Mr. Henry Oloja, Mr. Adekunle Victor and Miss Mfon Otung, who anchored topics like cracking the code, studying and adapting to organisation, financial literacy and numeracy skills, ethics and leadership qualities among others.
Adetula, who is the General Manager of JK Consulting Company Limited, which coordinated the programme, expressed satisfaction with the interns’ comportment.
Two of the interns, Miss Victoria Madu and Mr. Omini Eteng, noted that the GIS programme has offered them rare opportunity to acquire basic skills and ethics of work place, and profitable insight into life.
