Under President Buhari’s instructions, the Nigerian Army released a total of 249 Boko Haram members and their collaborators yesterday.
The Nigerian had arrested the rampaging BH members during an Operation Lafiya Dole mop up exercise.
The Boko Haram members were released under the orders of Lieutenant General Tukur Burutai.
The Nigerian stated that the Boko Haram members were just suspects and that investigations revealed they were innocent.
An Army reads: “The released persons were handed over to Borno State government through the Commissioner for Local Government by the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu.
“The two foreigners were however handed over to the Borno State Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service.
“Yesterday (Sunday), a total of 249 cleared suspected Boko Haram terrorists and accomplices were released… as approved by the chief of army staff in Maiduguri.
“The release comprised 169 men, 46 women and 34 children. They were handed over to the Borno state government in northeast Nigeria.
“They were counselled to “Remain law-abiding and go about their lawful business.
“Each of them was given a token of N3,000 naira.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Local Government in Bornu State commended the effort of the military in their fight against terrorism and insurgency.
He also commended their respect for human rights as manifested in the painstaking efforts that led to the clearance and subsequent release of the suspected terrorists.
In a related development, the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, stated that the “29 Brigade Quick Reaction Force (QRF) carried out an ambush against Boko Haram terrorists east of Marguba village in Kaga Local Government Area, Borno State.
