Since the crisis between herders and other Nigerians across the country intensified resulting in the killing of hundreds of innocent people, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has remained consistent in his call for the establishment of ranches as a lasting solution to the menace.
Governor Ortom has not only spoken out against the frequent invasion of communities by herdsmen and the massacre of people on their ancestral lands, he has also remained consistent on his stand that grazing reserves won't solve the problem as the current population of the country makes it impossible for the success of green reserves.
Governor Ortom has said many times that Benue, for instance, has no land for grazing and that the state would only encourage the establishment of ranches. To actualise the resolve of his administration, Governor Ortom recently sent a bill for the creation of ranches and prohibition of grazing reserves to the State House of Assembly.
Now, Governor Ortom's call and those of other Nigerians of goodwill have yielded a positive result. The Federal Government has agreed to shelve the idea of grazing reserves and embrace ranches as a solution to the frequent clashes between herdsmen and farmers in parts of the country. The Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh who stated this during a visit to Adamawa State, said the Federal Government has dropped the idea of grazing reserves and will implement ranches.
For Governor Samuel Ortom and the rest of Benue people, this is a welcome development and the way to go. Though there is no perfect system anywhere in the world, the establishment of ranches is a veritable way to ending frequent attacks on communities and killing of people by herdsmen.
