PDP Crisis Worsens As Two Senate Members Dumped Party For APC

The leadership crisis rocking the PDP is not abating in any way, and the defection of two Senate members of the party and the fact that the party lacks a recognized national executive have further embroiled the embattled party in more soup, Vanguard writes.
It will be recalled that early last week, the police sealed off the national secretariat of the party on the basis that it must be protected from ambitious leaders within various factions fighting to take over the secretariat.
Just Wednesday, two PDP lawmakers in the House of Representatives defected from the party and joined the APC, citing the division within the party at the national level as their reason for crossing over to another rival party. Moreover, Section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 constitution empowers members of the National Assembly to defect to another party of their choice if the party that elected them into office is divided.
With the defection of Dr. Tony Nwoye from Anambra State and Emmanuel Udende from Benue State, PDP membership in the House has now dropped from 140 to 138 while that of the APC has surged from 213 to 215.
Dr. Nwoye, a medical doctor is a former national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and a former chairman of the Anambra State PDP chapter. He also used to be the immediate past governorship candidate. But Nwoye and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former president Goodluck Jonathan did not seem to be on a good relationship given the obvious fact that Jonathan seemed in 2013 to prefer Willy Obiano.
Rep. Udende on the other hand is close to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State even though he represents Katsina Ala federal constituency that used to be the preserve immediate past Governor Gabriel Suswam. The battle for defection had been drawn when Ortom left PDP and joined APC last year because Suswam frustrated him out, now Udende has also crossed the carpet since PDP would not allow a level-playing political ground in the state.
