Nigerian Senate initiates 300 bills in one year

Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Babajide Omoworare (APC Osun East), declared yesterday that a total of 300 bills were introduced in the first year of existence of the 8th Senate .
Omoworare who made the declaration at a media briefing after plenary, said out of the 300 bills, 11 were passed, three withdrawn for representation by their sponsors while one was negative.
He added that four were executive bills while the rest were members’ bills.
He explained further that 186 of the bills were at the first reading stage while 45 were read a second time and referred to relevant committees with several others awaiting publication in the journal.
He equally disclosed that the Red Chamber passed a total number of 96 “land-mark resolutions” besides a number of confirmations of appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari since June 2015.”
“I am sure you will agree with me that in totality, this has been a very eventful legislative period and the Senate has done remarkably well as an arm of government and we hope to build on this feat in the session ahead,” he said.
Omoworare listed the bills passed as the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (Repeal and Re-enactment Bill, National Centre for Cancer and Treatment Bill, Electronic Transaction Bill, 2015 Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill and Supplementary Appropriation Bill 2015.
Others, according to him, are the Federal Capital Territory Statutory Appropriation Act (Amendment ) Bill 2016,High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja (Amendment) Bill 2015,2016 Appropriation Bill, Commercial Agricultural Credit Scheme Bill, Environmental Health Officers (Registration) Act 2002 (Amendment) Bill and the Nigeria Institute of Soil Science Bill,2016.
Omoworare, while noting that yesterday, being the 9th of June,2016, officially marked the end of the 1st Legislative Session of the 8th Senate, disclosed that instead of adjourning for a short break, the Senate would continue plenary till June 23,2016, to finally proceed on a six-week annual recess on July 22,2015 to September 12,2016.
