The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, may in a few days, embark on an extensive cabinet reshuffle and sack top government appointees that are found wanting, LEADERSHIP has gathered.
This is coming on the heels of the divine intervention sought by the governor during the fervent prayer and fasting that was organised to mark Democracy Day celebration, to dedicate Benue and deliver it from unsettled challenges and negativities.
Governor Ortom and his political godfather, Senator George Akume, as well as the senator representing Benue North East, Barnabas Gemade had on Monday, knelt down to pray, laying bare their hearts, while calling on God to quickly intervene, and save the state from total collapse.
Preaching at the Democracy Day celebration, the leader of the prayer meeting, Pastor Gbile Akanni advised Ortom to “remove drunkards and fornicators from his administration” saying government is a serious business that do not require irresponsible persons to handle.
Meanwhile, yesterday in Makurdi, there was uneasy calm in the entire metropolis and other major towns of the agrarian state as political big wigs and party supporters gathered in various places, including amusement parks, and under trees discussing the matter.
It was gathered that the alleged sack and cabinet reshuffle was necessary to weed out some unproductive appointees and to further inject new blood into the system to enhance rapid development.
Several political stakeholders have reportedly complained that some of the commissioners were ineffective and the governor should remove them.
However, fielding questions from newsmen in Makurdi recently, Governor Ortom said the issue of cabinet reshuffle was a veritable tool by government to ensure checks and balances but further insisted that he had not yet taken the decision to sack and or reshuffle his cabinet.
