Edo 2016 poll: PDP holds delegates’ election under a committee chaired former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam,

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Monday held its election to select ad hoc delegates for the party’s June 20 governorship primary in the state.
The election was conducted by a committee set up by the Ahmed Makarfi-led national caretaker committee of the party.
The committee was chaired by a former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, while a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Stephen Oru, was the secretary.
Other members of the committee are Dr. Akilu Nabawa, Bobo Misau, Nonye Nwangu and Ejike Ani.
After the election, three delegates were elected from each of the192 wards across the 18 local government areas of the state, bringing the total to 576.
The delegates were elected by a consensus in most of the wards in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha and Egor local government areas where the elections were monitored by our correspondent.
Suswam, who addressed party members while monitoring the elections, described the outcome of the 2007 and 2012 governorship polls in Edo as “a mistake” of the past, which the party must avoid in the September 10 governorship election.
He said that it was unfortunate that the electorate was swayed by what he described as “propaganda” by the ruling All Progressives Congress.
According to the former governor, who was also accompanied by the state chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, politics centres on providing viable alternatives, which he said that the PDP would offer.
He decried the current state of the country’s economy and said that slide in the economy has had a negative impact on the Nigerians.
“We listened to propaganda; we created a problem for ourselves because most of us voted for the APC because they were telling lies and we believed those lies. So today, this party (PDP) is preparing to have a candidate that will bring happiness,” Suswam said.
The former governor added, “The PDP is a party that believes in due process. The caretaker committee of the party selected us to come and conduct this exercise which would lead to the election of who becomes the candidate of the party.
“Because of the seriousness attached to the exercise, the PDP selected prominent Nigerians. We refused to remain in our hotels and expect a report to be brought to us. We wanted to be sure of what comes out of the exercise. I’m impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of the people, especially the chairman and his members, stakeholders and the aspirants.”
