United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) meets the wife of the governor, Chief Dr Mrs Eunice Ortom on the ills of female genital mutilation (FGM)
The UNFPA officials were at the Benue people's Makurdi to interface with Her Excellency on development intervention, particularly, on female genita mutilation (FGM), which is defined by the who as "all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons". it is recognised as a violation of the human rights of women and girls.
The team briefed the wife of the governor on how they have been able to put intervention in place for oju, obi lgas in education on dangers of fgm, and potentially, she champions abandonment of fgm in benue as a thematic foci in her pet project.
Her Excellency, Dr. Mrs. Eunice ortom remarked that the health of the people is paramount to society's economic survival. in her words, she concluded, "I appreciate that you have gone far in the war against female genital mutilation in Benue. I personally do appreciate the fact of the relevance of these efforts to girl child education. emphasizing that "the samuel ortom administration is solidly behind UNFPA and with counterpart funding as promised earlier."
