ROADMAP TO END FARMERS, HERDERS CLASHES ON THE WAY - ORTOM

By Tahav Agerzua
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, today disclosed that he and his colleagues across the country would meet to prepare a roadmap to end the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria.
He made the disclosure at the Benue Peoples House when the Rights Monitoring Group from the World Bank visited him.
The group was in the state on an assessment of environmental challenges.
The Governor lamented that the clashes had assumed more deadly dimensions as the entire state was at the moment under siege from the influx of foreign herdsmen whose mission was to destroy everything, chase away the people and occupy the land.
According to him if soldiers had not been deployed to Agatu and other affected communities, the herdsmen had overran them and occupied their land.
He said states from all the regions of the country were passing through similar experiences hence the imperative for Governors to meet and fashion a roadmap, with the support of President Muhammadu Buhari, to end the crises.
"Ranching remains the permanent solution to the problem because the increase in population make grazing routes and reserves impracticable on the long run," he stressed.
Governor Ortom stated that erosion and flooding was hampering farming and other human activities in several local government areas particularly Makurdi, Guma, Gboko, and Ogbadibo and appealed for assistance to tackle the challenges.
Leader of the delegation, Mr Olufemi Aduwo, said the team was in the state to assess environmental challenges for posisible intervention.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Ortom for receiving the delegation at short notice.
The Governor also met and prayed with Nigerian and American clergy who are participating in the on-going End of Discussion program of the Liberty Arena Family Ministry.
