Born in 1975, in Gboko, Benue state of Nigeria, Nyikwagh Bat Hills, who hails from
Vandeikya Local Government area, went to Government College, Makurdi after his
primary education at St. Theresa’s Primary School, also in Makurdi. In 1997 he
proceeded to the University of Maiduguri and came out in the year 2000 with a
Bachelors degree in literature. While in school, he started writing scripts for theatre and
TV. As a graduating student, Nyikwagh was awarded the best student prize for
creativity by the university in 2000. His first work on TV: Fatal Mistake won him his first
prize: the NTA Best Prize for Scriptwriting in the year 2000.
Nyikwagh was at the National Film Institute, Jos in 2001 for a certificate course in film
Jir T. Jir's photo.directing, in order to re-position himself for a career in film production. He did his NYSC
programme at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Victoria Island, Lagos where he
was eventually retained as an assistant producer in the Programmes Directorate, writing
and editing TV scripts, editing and evaluating national programmes. The Prolific screen
Writer cum banker also attended several short courses in various aspects of banking &
entrepreneurship at many prestigious training institutes across Nigeria, including the
Enterprise Development Centre of the Pan Atlantic University, Abuja etc.
A Seasoned Banker: In 2003, Nyikwagh left the services of Nigeria Television Authority
to join the banking industry as an executive trainee, beginning with continental trust
bank, Victoria Island, Lagos. Even then, his love for the arts never died as he continued
writing and screen playing movies at spare times. Two years later, the film-maker-turn
ed-banker left the services of Continental Trust Bank and joined UBA Plc in 2006 where
he worked in many capacities and became the Regional Cluster Manager for Retail
Credits Marketing Group in Apapa Central Region, Lagos. In this capacity he was
responsible for marketing, supervising and managing all the retail loans and mortgages
in over 13 branches of UBA within the region. As the Regional Marketing Cluster
Manager, Nyikwagh was also saddled with the function of building profitable business
alliances and partnerships on consumer finance and mortgages on behalf of the bank
with other corporate organizations.
He continued his banking Career in various business capacities and positions to
Ecobank Nigeria Plc, Bank PHB Nigeria Plc, Wema Bank Nigeria Plc, in Apapa, Victoria
Island, Kirikiri, Tincan Island and later returned to Benue in 2009 in order to render his
wealth of banking experience to the banking community of the state. He was appointed
the branch manager of Wema Bank Plc, Makurdi where he served meritoriously until
2012 when he took a break from banking and resigned his appointment in order to
pursue other personal goals, particularly in the area of entertainment & Creativity.
A Career Film Maker: Nyikwagh Bat Hills has participated in many local and international
programmes for TV and Film productions, notable among these include: The BBC”
African Performance” in 1998; “Wright Around the World” BBC/ British Council
International play-writing program in 1999. Others include: the NTA scriptwriting
competition 1999 where Fatal Mistake won him the overall Best prize in English
category; The LNG prize for literature 2006, where his play Waiting in the Rain, published
in 2005 made entry.
The award-winning writer: Nyikwagh Bat Hills has done over 22 Nollywood screenplays
produced to his credit. Full list of movies and other works here attached). His biggest
movie project: Mission to Nowhere, a multiple award-wining master piece was released
in 2008 after its post-production edit in California, USA. Mission to Nowhere which was
premiered in the UK by Atlantic overseas hit the box offices in England, Scotland, Ireland
and Wales for 2 consecutive months before it was finally released in Nigeria and the
UK. Nyikwagh Bat Hills’ Mission to Nowhere which was sponsored by Zenith and Access
Bank Plc picked 8 nominations in the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) 2008,
winning in a single category. The movie also won 2 different awards in the 2008 Zuma
Film Festival, including the “Best picture” category among several other nominations in
the same year. Mission to Nowhere was eventually selected by the Federal Government
as Nigeria’s entry to the 2008 International Film Festival in Cairo, Egypt. It also secured
general release on chains of elite cinemas in UK, South Africa, Niger & Barbados.
In 2014, for the sole purpose of drumming massive support for Dr Samuel Ortom’s
governorship aspiration, Nyikwagh Bat Hills sponsored the production of The Workman
movie project in alliance with the West African Movie Academy and Benue Artistes for
Ortom & Abounu. The Workman is a special biopic on Chief Dr Samuel Ortom, which
eulogizes some aspects of his life, especially in terms of philanthropy and goodwill,
dwelling upon the Oracle Foundation as the central point of view. Thousands of copies
of the Movie DVDs, audio CDs & tapes (radio versions) were distributed to the masses
across Benue as strategic campaign tools for mass mobilization.
Nyikwagh, a rare technocrat in the world of banking & movie making has been the
Director/CEO of the West African Movie Academy, until recently when he was appointed
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Entertainment by His Excellency Governor
Samuel Ortom.
