The Benue state government made this known today at the headquarters of the National Boundary Commission Abuja where the chairman of the State Boundary Committee and State Deputy Governor, Engr. Benson Abounu led a powerful Benue state delegation to a meeting with officials of the Commission..
Engr, Abounu who said they were at the Commision as a testament of their desire for a peaceful resolution of the age-long crisus called on the National Boundary Commission to get up and speed up work on the demarcation of the boundary between the two states, an exercise that had begun but was disrupted by hostile Ngbo youths.
He appealed to the Commission to prevail on the Ebonyi state government to demonstrate more commitment to a peaceful resolution of the crisis, adding that all the past three joint peace meetings which couldn't hold was caused by Ebonyi state.
The Deputy Governor said that contrary to reports, it was the Ngbo people of Ebonyi state that are the aggressors, constantly attacking and killing the Agila people on their farms and homes.
He said the Benue people are committed to peace and good neighbourliness and would want all parties to the conflict to stop paying lip service to the search for peace and make compromises to achieve the much needed peace.
Engr.Abounu who lamented the total dislocation of all forms of socio,-economic activities in the affected areas expressed the readiness of the Benue state government to fully cooperate with the Commission and the Ebonyi state government in bringing back peace to the two communities that had before the break-out of hostilities inter-married and co-existed peacefully..
Responding, the Director General of the Commission, represented by the Director, Internal Boundary, Surveyor Adamu Adaji appreciated the steps taken by the Benue state government and its readiness to find ways of ending the conflict..
He promised to properly brief the Vice-President and to find ways of prevailing on the Ebonyi state government to be more involved in the resolution of the conflict.
He agreed that not much has been achieved in the past in ending the boundary clashes that has cost so much human lives and destroyed the livelihood of the people but promised that the Commission would henceforth redouble its effort in bringing it to an end.
The meeting today was a scheduled joint Benue/Ebonyi state boundary meeting which should have had in attendance delegates from the two states. However, the Ebonyi state delegation pulled out at the last minute citing the need for further consultations,
