To all my friends especially those who took time off to rejoice with me over my recent appointment as Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the Benue State University, I appreciate your kind words and generous prayers. I want to assure you that we have a very good Council here, made up of very good and fair minded people. The Benue State University is a place of promise. It has potential and very good staff and students. We must collectively reinforce the University as the foundation of our intellectual infrastructure in the State. You may wish to know that we are coming at a time when State funding is shrinking. This calls for making difficult choices regarding priorities and strategies for sustaining the University idea for our State and people. We must brainstorm and be clear on how the University can serve our State better. How the University can expand access and ensure affordable services to our people. The University as a steward and repository of knowledge must find ways of leveraging our many advantages in the State and helping us appreciate the importance of research, innovation and discovery. Our Benue State University must strive to be a healthy cultural centre where our products can enrich the State with respect for each other and mutual trust. We need ideas. Many ideas. How can we do better research and how can we fund it? What initiatives can the University champion to expand access and make its services affordable? How can we build a world class University? These and many questions will be put on the front burner and we intend to engage with you critically and honestly. We hope you will give us support by letting us into your rich minds on some of these issues. We are convinced that we will go to the next level and that next level will be good enough for the University and the State.
