Following the protest action that took place yesterday, the management of the Benue State University, Makurdi has asked the aggrieved students of the University under the auspices of the Students’ Union to review the hiked conditional charges in the University.
During the peaceful protest, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Julius Ashiko agreed to the demands of the students to close the school portal for the new students while leaders of the students negotiate a compromise with the management. It was with the agreement that the protest was suspended pending the outcome of the meeting.
During the meeting which was made up of student leaders, some administrative staff, and a few government functionaries, it was agreed that the students should propose new conditional charges and submit to the University Management for ratification.
In the interim, the School Portal shall remain inaccessible for registration of new students pending when the ratification is completed and the new charges announced. This is however, not to disrupt normal activities of returning students as scheduled on the academic calendar.
The new proposed charges by the students leaves acceptance fee at N10,000 as against the initial N22,000 and certificate at N4,000 and N5,000 for degree /sub-degree programmes and post-graduate programmes respectively as against the initial N10,000 and N15,000 for degree /sub-degree programmes and post-graduate programmes.
Development levy that was at N50,000 for Health Sciences, Law, and Management Sciences and N25,000 for other courses has been slashed to N10,000 and N5,000 in the students’ proposal. The new proposed charges have summed up to N88,000 for Law, Health Sciences and Management Sciences, and N78,000 for other courses as against the initial N215,000 and N175,000 (calculation is based on local transcripts).
