Benue State University gets new governing council

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Wednesday, inaugurated a new Governing Council of Benue State University (BSU). Speaking at the ceremony in Makurdi, Ortom urged the council members to be fair and strictly comply with the university’s laws and Nigerian University Commission (NUC) regulations to be able to actualise the vision of the institution. He appealed to the council to quickly address the issues surrounding the institution and fully implement the government white paper on the university’s visitation panel. “Our state university has so many issues bordering on vision, transparency, accountability, salary structure, among others, so quickly address these issues. “As the saying goes, show me your level of education and I will tell you your level of economic development. “The welfare of our students must be taken seriously because it is because of them that we establish this university,” Ortom said.

The governor warned that no case of corruption would be accommodated, adding that the council should make the university a role model for all African universities. In his acceptance speech, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Board, Prof. Zackary Gundu, described the university as an “institution of promise”. Gundu said that the council would not disappoint the people of Benue, adding that it was incumbent on the board to “leave a wealthy mark on the institution within the next four years”. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the council, which has seven members, has Prof. Johnson Onah, Dr Mathias Oyigeya, Mr Sabastine Hon (SAN), Mr Walliam Iortyom and Mr Atagher Ionguga as members.
