The police in Benue State are trying to know the whereabouts of the Vicar General of Otukpo Catholic Diocese, Very Reverend Father John Adeyi, whose abductors are asking for a ransom of N25 million.
Punch investigation reveals that Adeyi who was kidnapped Sunday afternoon as he was traveling from Otukpa in Ogbadibo local government area to Ugbokolo in Opkokwu local government had requested that a ransom of N10 million be released to his abductors but the amount was said to have been rejected by the suspects.
At the time of filing this report, the kidnappers, Adeyi and officials of the diocese were said to be discussing the issue of ransom on phone.
It was gathered that the reverend father who presides over St Bernard’s Catholic Parish, Okpoga in Okpokwu, had urged the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt Rev (Dr ) Michael Apochi, to use his good offices to ensure that he was rescued early.
Confirming the incident, the Police Commissioner, Mr Paul Yakadi, said the command was working round the clock to rescue Reverend Father Adeyi.
Yakadi also said the command was able to rescue one Dr Abah who was kidnapped in Otukpo because members of the public cooperated and gave the police reliable information. He called on those with privileged information on the whereabouts of Adeyi to make it available to the police in confidence.
Meanwhile, the Secretary General of a socio-cultural organisation known as Opiatoha K’Idoma, Mr Adoka Adaji, has condemned the spate of kidnapping in Idoma land, saying the development was a disgrace to Idoma nation.
Adaji urged security agencies to ensure the early release of Reverend Father Adeyi and called on those providing haven for kidnapping to desist from doing so before the society classifies them as criminals.
He alleged that cultists in Otukpo killed seven persons during the weekend and lamented that crime was having upper had in Otukpo.
