NIGERIAN TEACHERS GIVE GOV ORTOM AWARD


The Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria, AOPSHON, today presented the award of 'Father of Education' to the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom in recognition of his numerous achievements and efforts in developing the education sector.
The award ceremony took place at the opening of the 2016 National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting at the Royal Choice Inn, in Makurdi, Benue State.
The teachers described Governor Ortom as a true promoter of education and friend of the teacher.
In his address, the National President of AOPSHON, Comrade Mahmud Lawal, commended Governor Ortom for being the first Governor to implement the national minimum wage of N18.000 to Benue teachers.
He said the Governor through his administration's efforts in addressing the challenges facing education had proven that development is possible if a leader dedicates his mind to the mandate given to him.
Responding, Governor Samuel Ortom thanked AOPSHON immensely for the award, stating that it will spur him to do more in the area of education and other sectors of the economy.
He described education as the foundation of development, stressing that no society could progress without a solid educational system.
He recalled the challenges he faced as a youth in his quest to acquire knowledge, disclosing that those experiences reinforced his determination to make Benue's education sector one of the best in the country.
The Governor said it was a deliberate policy of his administration to make education one of the five pillars of its blueprint as already demonstrated in the award of contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of 700 schools in the 23 local government areas of the state.
On teachers' welfare, Governor Ortom assured them that salaries and other entitlements of teachers had been made a priority by the his administration, saying that the existing cordial relationship between the Government and teachers will be sustained.
Other awardees during the ceremony included Benue State Commissioner for Education, Professor Dennis Ityavyar and the Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education, Benue State, Dr. Philip Tachin.
