A group within Nigeria’s opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Restart PDP Group has filed a suit asking an Abuja High Court to stop the party’s national convention slated for May 21.
According to Daily Trust, the group is asking the court to stop the convention until the PDP membership register is computerised as stipulated in section 8(11) of its constitution.
Section 8(11) of PDP Constitution says: “The party membership register shall be computerised to ensure control and to avoid fraud, and all ward registers shall be closed one month to congresses.”
Nwosu Emmanuel and Eze Chuks Silas, filed the suit heightening fears that fresh crisis is brewing within the party.
The two members, who filed the suit on March 8, are also asking the court to order the PDP national chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff and other National Working Committee (NWC) members to vacate their offices by the end of this month.
The PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) had approved May 21, for the party’s convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, as proposed by the Sheriff-led NWC.
But former ministers of the PDP and the PDP Restart Group, are insisting that all members of the NWC, including the new chairman, should vacate their offices on March 31.
Emmanuel and Silas are asking the court to “restrain the 1st defendant, PDP, and all its organs from conducting party congresses and the 2016 national convention, pending the computerisation of the party membership register, as stipulated in Section 8(11) of the party’s constitution.
The spokesman of the group, Jackson Ude, said the suit became necessary to ensure that the PDP allowed its constitution to prevail instead of “back-door agreement by few selfish individuals in the party.
Meanwhile, the acting national chairman of PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff has vowed not to work with people causing crisis in the party.
Sheriff made this known when a delegation of the Arewa Social Media Forum led by Yusuf Dingyadi paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
