The College of Health Sciences of the Benue State University, Makurdi, last Thursday graduated its second batch of 13 medical doctors, bringing the total number to 40.
The first batch of 27 graduated last year. Both are pioneers who had stagnated at the institution for 12 years on account of non-accreditation of the College until the Ortom administration came on board and tackled the challenge.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Samuel Ortom reiterated the determination of his administration to sustain standards at the College of Health Sciences in order to ensure that it continued to turn out the much needed medical manpower for the State.
Represented by his Deputy, Engineer Benson Abounu, the Governor who attributed the high standard of the College to its caliber of well trained and experienced lecturers assured that the Government would do everything within the limits of its capacity to assist the institution to excel.
Governor Ortom described the graduands as the finest brains and expressed delight that he was privileged to witness the graduation of the second batch of Medical Doctors from the College four months.
He advised the graduands to justify the training they had received by being of good conduct so as to make the College and their parents proud.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Msugh Kembe expressed gratitude to the state government for the continued payment of staff salaries and funding the accreditation exercises of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the Nigerian Universities Commission despite the lean resources at its disposal.
Professor Kembe advised the graduands to always abide by the ethics of their profession. Provost of the College, Professor Simon Adebisi, implored the doctors to abide by the Hippocratic Oath and assured the founding fathers of the school of their commitment to the realization of the vision behind the establishment of the College.
The Dean of Clinicals, Dr Terlumun Swende, thanked Governor Ortom for his efforts at ensuring the final accreditation of the College.
