The Benue State House of Assembly has approved the dissolution of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).
The approval, which was granted at the plenary on Wednesday, was to pave the way for the reconstitution of the commission in readiness for the forthcoming Local Government Elections in the state.
The decision was sequel to a letter written to the House by Governor Samuel Ortom, seeking dissolution of the Prof. Philip Ahire-led BSIEC, in line with Section 6 (3b) of the law establishing the commission.
The letter said that the dissolution of the election body would enable the governor’s administration inject new blood into the system and guarantee credible local government polls expected to hold soon.
The speaker of the House, Terkimbi Ikyange, after a voice vote, held that the BSIEC has been dissolved as requested by the governor.
Meanwhile, there are indications that a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Benue State University, Dr John Tor Tsuwa is set to be appointed the next BSIEC Chairman.
