Nigerian farmers, under the aegis of Association of Small Scale Agro Producers in Nigeria, ASSAPIN, on Monday, pleaded with the Federal Government to take immediate action to stem the unending attacks and killings of farmers in parts of the country by suspected Fulani herdsmen. Herdsmen… as death merchants They cautioned that if prompt action was not taken to address the issue the country faced the prospect of a steady decline in food crop production and its attendant food shortages. Speaking yesterday in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, at a three day sensitization meeting on the ‘Right to Food’ bill, ASSAPIN National Coordinator, Mr. Charles Adu lamented that the prices of food had skyrocketed because of low yields from farms due mainly to attacks on farmers by the herdsmen. Represented by the Benue state Coordination of ASSAPIN, Mrs. Janet Odejo, he regretted that farmers had become endangered species who were killed in their hundreds annually by the invaders and pleaded for government intervention.
