Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, today apologised to traders at the Makurdi Modern Market for the state government's inability to provide amenities at the market over the years.
He directed the Commissioner of Water Resources and Environment to evacuate refuse at the market within one week and also ensure the restoration of water supply as soon as possible.
According to the Special Adviser on Media and ICT Mr Tahav Agerzua, the Governor Ortom gave the apology and directives after a tour of the market.
He said the market was critical to the economy of the state and said in spite of current financial challenges, facilities that were necessary to the survival of the market such as fire fighting equipment would be provided.
The Governor inspected burnt shops, stalls and roads and also purchased food items at the market.
Chairman of the traders' union, Mr Francis Okoye, had listed inadequate security, lack of water supply, frequent fire outbreaks, and bad roads as some of the problems in the market and solicited the Governor's intervention.
The Governor also inspected on-going work at the school of Nursing and Midwifery, Makurdi, Wadata Market, and Benue Links.
He later paid condolence visits to the families of Mr. John Awange, the late Justice Joseph Jella of the Court of Appeal and the late Iyua Adorogo.
Governor Ortom urged the families to look to God for sustainance as he alone gave and took life.
