IN their efforts to ensure a rancor free senatorial re-run election in the Benue South District today, the Benue State Police Command and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) have deployed 11,000 personnel to the area.
The re-run election is being contested between the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Daniel Onjeh and the candidate of the Peoples democratic Party (PDP), former Senate President, David Mark, who was ousted through an Appeal Court judgment.
The State Commissioner of Police, Paul Yakadi while deploying his men to the area said the posting became imperative to fully maintain law and order during and after the election.
According to Yakadi, movement of persons and vehicles has been restricted in the area between 6a.m. and 6p.m. today so as to checkmate any breach of security in the zone.
On his part, the State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Ugwumba Igwe stated that the deployment of 5000 men of his command was to enhance and complement efforts of other security agencies throughout the period of the election.
The state Governor, Samuel Ortom, has however appealed to voters in the Senatorial District who have their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) to turn out in their numbers and vote in the election.
Ortom, who made the appeal while addressing stakeholders from the zone in Makurdi, also assured the people that adequate security has been provided for them to be able to come out and exercise their franchise freely without molestation.
Meanwhile, the state Resident Electoral Officer, Prof. Istafanus Dafwang appealed to the candidates and their supporters to shun violence during the election.
Dafwang said simultaneous accreditation and voting would commence at 8a.m, with collation starting immediately after voting is completed.
“The whole process is expected to be completed at by 4p.m. at the polling units and RA/ Ward and local government area by 6p.m.,” Dafwang added.
